Southwest Virginia has one of the highest concentrations of veterans in the State, combine that with neighboring Western North Carolina and Northeast Tennessee, that number increases dramatically. The Veteran's Stand Down at Laurel Creek Campground outreach program is designed to connect veteran’s peer-to-peer, for veteran-to-veteran assistance. The peer support groups will meet at Laurel Creek Campground near Mount Rogers, the highest peak in Virginia, and use it as a base camp. Staff from the Veteran's Stand Down will lead veterans on adventures consisting of horseback riding, hiking the Appalachian Trail from Whitetop Mountain, climbing Mount Rogers peak, cycling the Virginia Creeper Trail and swimming. At night veterans meet back at base camp for dinner and campfire chats with family and friends. The gatherings at Laurel Creek Campground involve veterans meeting with one another to share experiences and help each other along with trained mentors who help lead discussions.
Rescued Heart offers retreat experiences for veterans and non-veterans alike in the form of Rescued Heart Warrior's Boot Camp. RH Warrior's Boot Camp is a two day, three night retreat experience involving multimedia presentations, worship, quiet reflection and adventure. It is an opportunity for participants to explore what it means to be authentic in their family, church and society. This is accomplished by exploring the following 6 topics:
A Larger Story: Participants will explore how great stories in books and movies point us to the larger story that God is telling.
Life is a Battle: We were designed to fight, but what exactly does that mean? What does it mean to fight for your family, culture and society? Who and what is the enemy? Can we win the battles? Participants will learn the answers to these questions as they explore the battles they face daily.
Authentic Intimacy: Participants will discover how true intimacy can empower them to move into life intentionally with loving strength.
A Rescued Heart: Participants will learn how to walk in victory with a heart that has been rescued by God.
A Community of friends: Genuine friendships are difficult to form. Men and women both can learn and discover how being in community with others will help them live the kind of life they were made and destined to live.
A True Story: Participants will discover and experience the story that only they alone can write; the story of thier life as it was meant to be.
